We lived in the hotel next door for a year and, when we got bored with the pool, it was time to head to the courts. The lights were suspect and the nets had holes in them, but it sure was fun. Never in a million years did I think that 25 years later I would be playing ladies league tennis, let alone own a tennis store and a 12 court facility. I love the movie Forrest Gump. “Life is like a box of chocolates…you never know which one you’re going to get.” It has got to be one of the best movie lines ever and it describes my tennis game to a T. One day I have the best forehand this side of the Mississippi (in my mind of course) and the next…well. It gets especially bad around the Grand Slams when my thoughts of tennis grandeur really get exaggerated. I was fortunate enough to go to New York this year for the US Open. As I sat courtside watching Juan Carlos Ferrero and Giles Simon battle it out, I could not help but wonder if Giles had secretly watched me play at some point and stolen my technique for the heavy down the line forehand winner. What horror for my opponents back in Birmingham when they realize that I can crush the ball as hard as these guys do. Fast forward……unfortunately, my attempts at life imitating tennis art only last a set and then she figures me out. I guess I will have to be content with having the swankiest shoes on the court instead. Hey, have you seen my new Barricades?
